Just about finished a new book by a lookout up in Alberta. I believe her LO was a 100 foot tower ! Yikes ! Not sure I could climb that. The story is much more than about fire operations although there is plenty of that. Considerable content is about her personal life and is very [...]

This is a well known segment from a Steve Allen TV Show many years ago--- Jack is reading from his book On the Road.........unique pacing that suits the prose beautifully...... I never get tired of listening to it....... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LLpNKo09Xk
If there ever was a European painting / serigraph that reminds me of Desolation and Kerouac / Synder --- it is this one by Samivel. The mountain being contemplated doesn't have the twin spires of Hozomeen but otherwise..... : )
Supposedly Desolation Peak got its name from the look of the fire ravaged peak " back in the day " . I found an article on that here: https://w3.ric.edu/faculty/rdegouvenain/Ageeetal1990.PDF. Pretty technical by UW Forestry Department. Here is a small section that talks about the last 150 years: " In circa 1880, much of the west [...]
It depends on the month but about 700-800 people visit this website each month. This is amazing since this website doesn't even come up in the first four pages of a Google search for Desolation Peak...... So I appreciate all of you and wish you a wonderful and safe holiday. This is the front of my [...]
Marie was the Desolation LO for about 6 seasons back around 2005. She was a quiet, sensitive, introverted person and hard to get to know. I used to hike up every year and while sitting there looking down at the lake--- engage her in conversation. The first couple years she didn't say much. But as [...]
I found out from a lady who hiked Deso yesterday ( 9/7 ) that Jim is still manning the LO. I would imagine they will bring him down in the next week, the shutters will come down and the building will be secured for the winter. So if you are planning to hike up this [...]
8-26-21 I hiked up Hannegan Pass yesterday. It is the main route from the west to get into the North Unit. Deso is about 25 miles to the east from there. The picture below is looking back at the trail which follows the sidehill. I thought I might be able to see Deso from the [...]
Hi All ----my knee is still healing so I can't yet make the climb..... but I would love a picture from the top of Desolation ---> looking West to the Bear Creek fire plume with the lookout in the foreground. It would make a wonderful addition to the pictures on this website and I would [...]
Looks like North Cascades Park has their first big fire of the season burning right now in the very northern part. The plume should be an almost straight view west of the Deso LO. Here is a picture taken from the air south of the fire........paste this address in your browser -- https://www.instagram.com/p/CR-YBvzIPJZ/ or go [...]
